Hangad’s “Pieta” named a finalist in the Awit Awards
Hangad’s “Pieta (Oyayi sa Paanan ni Hesus)” was recently named a finalist in the Best Inspirational/ Religious category of the 19th Awit Awards.
A dramatic _expression of Mary’s sorrow, strength and steadfastness as she cradles her dead son at the foot of the cross, “Pieta” begins with a choir singing a cappella phrases from “Ave Maria”, then moves into Mary’s lonely, haunting soliloquy of heartache and longing. Halfway through the song, Mary begins to wonder where God has been in all this; but soon surrenders—in the words she uttered at the annunciation, “Ako’y alipin Mo, sundin ang loob Mo”—to the Father’s will. The song resolves into Michelangelo’s tender image of Mary’s faithfulness to her son, even unto his death.
The music for “Pieta” was composed by Paulo Tirol (who also provided the song’s piano accompaniment); lyrics were written by Michelle Joy Francia; Trin Panganiban-Custodio performed the six-minute solo, and cello passages arranged by Jay Gomez and played by Nino Llorin in the background. The choral a cappella introduction was arranged by Paulo Tirol and performed by Hangad.
“Pieta” was recorded in Hangad’s February 2005 album The Easter Journey, along with 22 other tracks around the themes of Lent and Easter. Like Hangad’s three previous albums, The Easter Journey was produced by the Jesuit Music Ministry.
The Awit Awards is an award-giving body spearheaded by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry, Inc. (PARI), which recognizes the people behind Filipino recorded music.
Other finalists in the 19th Awit Awards’ Best Inspirational/Religious category are Gary V’s “Lift Up Your Hands” (Star Records); Gary V’s “Break Me” (Universal Records); Christian Bautista’s “Now That You Are Here” (Warner Music Philippines); and Gary V’s “Lipad Ng Pangarap” (Star Records).
The date and venue of the awarding has yet to be announced.

SINGING A HISTORY OF FAITH
Some people say that life begins at forty, usually implying that better things are ahead, and that the things of the past forty years might as well be relegated to the dustbins of history. In the life of the Catholic Church, however, the past forty years have been anything but rubbish. Since the Second Vatican Council some forty years ago, the Church has striven to become more critical of itself and more responsive to the needs of its people, reviewing and reforming itself and its teachings. From social justice to liturgy, Vatican II renewed the face of the Church.
In the Philippines, we have experienced this renewal most commonly in the liturgy, and even the music of our Masses reflects the effort at giving the Filipino a voice with which to sing his faith. The history of Philippine liturgical music could be called a history of our faith as a people, and although life begins at forty, the past forty years are certainly worth celebrating.
This August, the Bank of the Philippine Islands, in cooperation with the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals and Duty Free Philippines, in partnership with the Loyola School of Theology and Jesuit Communications, present BAYAN, UMAWIT: A CONCERT CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF PHILIPPINE LITURGICAL MUSIC SINCE VATICAN II.
BAYAN, UMAWIT will trace the history of our faith over the last forty years by going through the history of our songs from the Latin hymns of our early childhood to the songs of the charismatic movement to the pop crossover hits that resonate with our souls. Lending their voices to this celebration are Noel Cabangon, Cooky Chua, Jett Pangan and May Bayot, along with the Ateneo Chamber Singers, Bukas Palad Music Ministry, Hangad, other guest choirs, instrumentalists, and performers. Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ, composer of many favorite liturgical songs such as "Tanging Yaman" and "Hindi Kita Malilimutan" serves as musical director. Bishop Chito Tagle and a surprise showbiz personality will be hosting each show.
If life does begin at forty, then we can expect more good things to come. But that doesn't stop us from remembering the good things that have come. Join us in celebrating the best of the past forty years. Join us in singing a history of our faith in BAYAN, UMAWIT!
